Hannes Messemer (Hans Edwin Messemer, 17 May 1924 – 2 November 1991) was a German actor whose rugged presence and commanding voice made him a staple of post‑war German cinema and television. Born in Dillingen an der Donau in Bavaria, he endured the horrors of the Eastern Front during World II, where he was captured by Soviet forces and spent time as a prisoner of war before escaping on foot across hundreds of miles, only to be detained later in the notorious London Cage for two years. After the war he experimented with various jobs, but by 1946 he had gravitated toward the stage, honing his craft with major theatre companies in Tübingen, Hamburg, Munich and Berlin despite having no formal training. His breakthrough came with the film Rose Bernd (1956) and was cemented the following year when he earned a Best Actor award for his portrayal of Colonel Rossdorf in The Devil Strikes at Night, launching a prolific career that spanned over three decades.

Messemer’s filmography includes notable titles such as The Doctor of Stalingrad, Der Transport (Destination Death), Die Brücke des Schicksals and the light‑hearted Babette Goes to War opposite Brigitte Bardot. International audiences remember him best as Oberst von Luger, the austere Kommandant in the classic war film The Great Escape (1963). He also achieved critical acclaim for his role as Colonel Muller in Roberto Rossellini’s award‑winning General della Rovere (1959), which secured the Golden Lion at Venice. On television he became a familiar face for over twenty years, starring in productions such as Union der festen Hand, Die Dämonen, and the series Sergeant Berry where he played Commissioner Deeds. His distinctive baritone also found a home in radio, where he recorded readings of Mao’s writings and the four Gospels. A lifelong heavy smoker and drinker, Messemer battled throat cancer in the 1980s; surgery left his voice reduced to a whisper, forcing his retirement. He made his final television appearance in 1989 before succumbing to a heart attack in Aachen at the age of 67.
