Thomas Francis Duffy (born November 9, 1955 in Newark, New Jersey) is an American actor whose career spans more than four decades of film and television work. Raised in the nearby suburb of Woodbridge, Duffy was a multi‑sport athlete at Woodbridge High School, participating in football, ice hockey, tennis and track while also engaging in drama and vocal music. He initially pursued a pre‑law track at Ohio University, where he continued to play football and hockey, but a chance audition for an opera sparked his shift to the performing arts. He ultimately earned a BFA in acting and was a member of Ohio’s 1979 MCHL championship hockey team, as well as a summer company participant at the Monomoy Theater on Cape Cod. Arriving in Hollywood in 1980, Duffy’s first television assignment—a role in CHiPs that never aired—was quickly followed by a co‑starring part as Olympic hockey player Dave Christian in the mini‑series Miracle on Ice. His feature film debut came the next year as the menacing Nirvana in Death Wish II, establishing him as a reliable character actor capable of portraying both villains and nuanced supporting figures.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Duffy built a steady résumé of diverse parts, appearing in cult classics such as To Live and Die in L.A., James Cameron’s The Abyss, and the crime drama State of Grace. He earned critical recognition for his work in the Sundance‑award‑winning The Waterdance (1992), and later reached mainstream audiences as paleontologist Dr. Robert Burke in Steven Spielberg’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), a role he prepared for by studying real‑life paleontologist Robert Bakker and even joining a field dig in Wyoming. Duffy’s versatility is evident in his comic turn as football‑loving dad Sam Moxon in Varsity Blues (1999) and his supporting turn in Independence Day (1996). He maintained a strong television presence with guest spots on The X‑Files, NYPD Blue, ER, and recurring roles on series such as Picket Fences, Days of Our Lives, and The Middle, where he played neighbor Jack Meenahan. In the 2000s he appeared in Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center (2006) in dual roles and starred in the avant‑garde horror comedy Rubber (2010). More recent work includes J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (2011) and a cameo in the Showtime series Shameless. Personal tragedy has marked his life; both his father and youngest sister were killed by drunk drivers in Woodbridge, and he survived a hit‑and‑run incident while filming Varsity Blues. Despite these hardships, Duffy remains an active and respected figure in the entertainment industry.
