Woodward Maurice "Tex" Ritter was born on January 12, 1905, in the small town of Murvaul, Texas, and raised on his family's farm in Panola County, where he developed the rustic authenticity that would define his legendary career. After excelling academically at South Park High School in Beaumont, he pursued higher education at the University of Texas at Austin, initially studying pre-law with a focus on government, political science, and economics, before briefly attending Northwestern Law School in Chicago. However, his passion for entertainment led him to New York City in 1928, where he launched his career on Broadway, appearing in productions such as The New Moon and creating the role of Cord Elam in Green Grow the Lilacs—the play that would later inspire the musical Oklahoma!—as well as starring in The Round Up and Mother Lode. Simultaneously, he became a pioneering voice in radio, beginning with a 1928 Houston program on KPRC before hosting America's first broadcast Western, The Lone Star Rangers on WOR in 1932, and creating the daily children's program Cowboy Tom's Roundup that aired for three years on East Coast stations.

In 1936, Ritter transitioned to Hollywood, making his film debut in Song of the Gringo and eventually appearing in over 70 motion pictures while contributing to 76 film soundtracks, often portraying singing cowboys with his distinctive voice and guitar. His recording career reached its zenith when he became the very first artist signed to Capitol Records in 1942, achieving massive success with the crossover hit "I'm Wastin' My Tears on You" in 1944, and later gaining cinematic immortality by recording and performing "The Ballad of High Noon" at the 1953 Academy Awards, where it won Best Original Song. As television emerged, he adapted seamlessly, hosting programs like Town Hall Party and Ranch Party, while also becoming a founding member of the Country Music Association and earning induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1964. He also earned a lifetime membership to the Grand Ole Opry in 1970, solidifying his status as a country music icon while working for radio station WSM. Beyond music and film, he provided the iconic voice of Big Al for Disney's Country Bear Jamboree, a performance still heard today at Tokyo Disneyland, and even ventured into politics with an unsuccessful 1970 Republican Senate campaign in Tennessee. Ritter married actress Dorothy Fay in 1941, with whom he raised two sons, including future television star John Ritter, before moving to Nashville in 1965 to focus on his musical legacy, passing away there on January 2, 1974.
