Sterlin Harjo (born November 14, 1979) is a Native American filmmaker whose roots run deep in the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma and Muscogee heritage. He grew up in Holdenville, Oklahoma, where the rhythms of reservation life and the wide‑open plains shaped his visual imagination. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma with a BA in art and film, Harjo earned a Sundance Institute fellowship in 2004, a pivotal moment that launched his short‑film career. His debut short Goodnight, Irene premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and captured a special jury award at Aspen Shortsfest, signaling his talent for blending humor with poignant cultural commentary. In 2006, United States Artists awarded him another fellowship, further solidifying his reputation as an emerging voice. Harjo’s early works are marked by an intimate portrayal of Indigenous experiences, using lyrical storytelling to explore themes of loss, identity, and community resilience. Harjo’s first feature, Four Sheets to the Wind (2007), follows a young Seminole man traveling to Tulsa after his father's death, earning a grand‑jury nomination at Sundance and a Best Director award at the American Indian Film Festival. He continued with Barking Water (2009), a road‑trip drama that won Best Drama at the American Indian Film Festival, and the documentary This May Be the Last Time (2014), which examined his grandfather’s mysterious disappearance and the intertwining of Creek hymns with Scottish folk music. The thriller Mekko (2015) further displayed his versatility. Beyond film, Harjo co‑created the groundbreaking FX series Reservation Dogs (2021‑2023), serving as executive producer, director, and co‑writer; the show garnered a Peabody Award, an Independent Spirit Award for Best New Scripted Series, and widespread acclaim for its all‑Indigenous creative team. In 2024 he co‑wrote the sports drama Rez Ball, and in 2025 he launched the series The Lowdown. His achievements have been recognized with a Tilghman Award, an American Indian Writers Award, and, most notably, a 2024 MacArthur Fellowship—the first filmmaker to receive the honor.
