Simon Oates was an English actor born Arthur Charles Simon Oates on 6 January 1932 in Canning Town, east London, who became one of the memorable faces of British television during the 1960s and 1970s. Moving to Finchley as a teenager, Oates initially trained as a heating engineer for his father's firm before embarking on his acting career, having also served in the British Army's Intelligence Corps during his national service. He began his professional career in theatrical repertory during the 1950s, eventually becoming the leading man at York Theatre Royal for several years. This theatrical foundation paved the way for his most iconic television role as Dr. John Ridge in the science fiction series Doomwatch, where he co-starred alongside John Paul as Dr. Spencer Quist and Robert Powell as Toby Wren. Oates also gained significant recognition for his regular appearances as Anthony Kelly in the espionage series The Mask of Janus and its spin-off The Spies.

Throughout his career, Oates amassed numerous guest appearances across popular British television series, including The Avengers, Man in a Suitcase, Jason King, The New Avengers, The Professionals, Bergerac, and The 10 Percenters. His portrayal of the suave, tuxedoed hard man in the classic Department S episode The Trojan Tanker was particularly memorable, with some suggesting that his performance may have influenced producers considering him for the role of James Bond. Indeed, his son Justin Brett later claimed that Oates was offered the role of James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever before Sean Connery reversed his retirement, though other sources suggest he was simply in contention before Roger Moore was ultimately chosen for Live and Let Die. Beyond television, Oates appeared in films such as Night Train to Paris (1964), The Terrornauts (1967), the Doomwatch film (1972), and BBC's Strangers and Brothers (1984). In addition to his straight acting, he worked as both a director and stand-up comic, performing with stars like Tom Jones, Sandie Shaw, and the Who, and even founded a touring theatre company in Canada. Oates passed away on 20 May 2009 following a protracted illness, leaving behind a legacy of versatile performances.
