Shuler Hensley: Movies & Box Office

Shuler Hensley is an American singer‑actor whose career has spanned more than three decades, earning him a reputation as one of Broadway’s most versatile baritones. Born on March 6, 1967 in Atlanta, Georgia, he grew up in nearby Marietta as the youngest of three children, the son of former Georgia Tech football star Sam P. Hensley Jr. and ballerina‑turned‑artistic director Iris Hensley, who gave him his first stage experience at age four in her production of The Nutcracker. After attending The Westminster Schools, Hensley earned a baseball scholarship to the University of Georgia, but a transformative recital by Jessye Norman and the chance to play Judge Turpin in a college staging of Sweeney Todd prompted a transfer to the Manhattan School of Music, where he majored in opera and graduated in 1989; he later completed a master’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music in 1993. His early professional work in the 1990s included roles such as Pitkin in On the Town, Joe in The Most Happy Fella, and Miles Gloriosus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, as well as appearances in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and classic operas like Carmen and Don Giovanni. A breakthrough came when he originated the title role of the Phantom in the German production of The Phantom of the Opera in Hamburg (1996) and, most famously, when he portrayed Jud Fry in the National Theatre’s 1998 revival of Oklahoma!, a performance that earned him an Olivier Award, a Tony Award, a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award after the show transferred to Broadway (2002‑2003). Hensley’s subsequent Broadway credits include Les Misérables (Javert), Tarzan (Kerchak), Young Frankenstein (the Monster), The Ferryman (Tom Kettle) and The Music Man (Marcellus Washburn), while his film work ranges from Van Helsing (as Frankenstein’s monster) to cameo appearances in The Greatest Showman and a recurring television role in Dexter: New Blood. In addition to his performing career, he lends his name to the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards—commonly called the Shuler Hensley Awards—supporting the next generation of theater talent.
