Shane West, born Shannon Bruce Snaith on June 10 1978 in Baton Rouge Louisiana, is an American actor, singer and songwriter whose career spans over two and a half decades. Early life was marked by a multicultural heritage; his mother Leah Catherine Launey is of Cajun French descent and worked as a lawyer, while his father Don Snaith was a Jamaican‑born drugstore owner with English and Portuguese‑Jewish roots. Both parents played in punk rock bands, immersing young Shannon in the music of the Clash, the Jam and Blondie, and fostering a lasting passion for the genre. After his parents divorced when he was four, the family moved to California, first to Compton and later to Norwalk, where he eventually adopted the stage name Shane West in high school to shed the feminine connotation of his birth name. Acting career began in 1995 with a guest spot on Picket Fences and accelerated when he landed the role of Eli Sammler on the ABC family drama Once and Again (1999‑2002). His breakout film role came opposite Mandy Moore in the 2002 adaptation of A Walk to Remember, earning a Teen Choice Award for chemistry. West subsequently appeared in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), joined the cast of ER as Dr Ray Barnett (2005‑2009), and starred as Michael Bishop in the CW series Nikita (2010‑2013).
