Saskia‑Sophie Rosendahl, born on 9 July 1993 in Halle (Saale), Saxony‑Anhalt, Germany, is a German actress who emerged from a rigorous background in dance and improvisational theatre before becoming an internationally recognised film talent. From the age of eight she joined the children’s ballet of the Halle Opera, performing in numerous stage productions between 2001 and 2011, an experience that gave her a strong sense of physicality and timing. Between 2008 and 2011 she expanded her craft in the improvisational troupe “Kaltstart” and at the New Theatre Halle, where she honed her ability to create characters on the spot and develop a nuanced emotional palette. Her screen debut arrived in 2010 with Wolfgang Dinslage’s drama Für Elise, but it was the following year, while still completing her school education, that Rosendahl landed the lead role of Lore in Cate Shortland’s anti‑war film Lore (2012). The performance, praised by Variety for its maturity and confidence, earned her the AACTA Award for Best Young Actor and the Best Actress prize at the 23rd Stockholm International Film Festival. Lore also secured the audience award at Locarno and became Australia’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, thrusting Rosendahl onto the global stage. After graduating in 2012, she continued to balance film and television work, starring in Vivian Naefe’s adaptation of The Taste of Apple Seeds and taking a leading role in Denis Dercourt’s A Pact later that year. In 2013 she was selected as one of the ten European “Shooting Stars” by the European Film Promotion and received a nomination for the New Faces Award. More recent projects include her portrayal of Petra in Lindenberg! Do your thing (2020), a character inspired by Udo Lindenberg’s song “Mädchen aus Ost‑Berlin”.
