
In 1931, the filming of Erich Kästner’s youth novel “Emil and the Detectives” begins, promising to launch the author to international fame. A unique bond develops between the childless Kästner and Hans, a nine-year-old boy portraying the character Little Tuesday. Years later, their relationship faces a severe challenge amidst the rise of the Third Reich, as Kästner’s books are censored and Hans becomes involved with the Hitler Youth.
