S. Pankajakshan Pillai, popularly known as S. P. Pillai, was born on 28 November 1913 in the serene temple town of Ettumanoor, then part of Travancore in British India. Orphaned at a young age after the death of both parents, he missed formal schooling but devoted himself to the traditional art of Ottan Thullal, receiving training at the renowned Kalamandalam for several years. This early immersion in performance arts laid the foundation for a prolific career on stage, where he initially appeared as a supporting actor in numerous Malayalam plays, honing a comic timing that would later become his trademark. His first foray into cinema was intended with the unreleased Bhootharayar by Appan Thamburan, but his official screen debut arrived with the 1940 film Jnanambika. The turning point came in 1951 when the super‑hit Nalla Thanka showcased his innate comedic talent, propelling him to fame across Kerala. Over the next two decades Pillai amassed a filmography of more than three hundred titles, delivering memorable performances in classics such as Snehaseema, Chemmen, Bharya, Vidarunna Mottukal and the legendary Vadakkan Pattu series where he embodied the character Paananar. In addition to acting, he demonstrated versatility as a singer, lending his voice to the patriotic song “Vayaranu Nammalkku Daivam” in the 1957 film Thaskaraveeran. His artistry was formally recognized when he received the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor in 1977 for his role in Taxi Driver, and he was later honored with the Kalaratnam Award from the Travancore Devaswom Board and the Mayoora Award. Pillai’s final screen appearance was in the 1981 drama Sanchari; he passed away on 12 June 1985 at the age of 71. His legacy lives on through his granddaughter, actress Manju Pillai, and through the enduring laughter he evoked in generations of Malayalam audiences.
