Kunjikrishna Menon, a strict and commanding patriarch, leads a large joint family that is deeply intertwined with tradition and authority. His son, Prem Nazir as Balan, is a responsible and caring young man who holds the family’s honor in high regard. Balan’s younger brother, K P Ummer as Aniyan, contrasts sharply with Balan — he’s selfish, emotionally cold, and shows little regard for others around him.
The story revolves around the complex relationships and conflicts within this family. Kesavankutty, Madhu as the son of Madhavi Amma, is in love with Kochammini, Jyothi Lakshmi as Kochammini, who is the niece of Menon and considered a suitable match. Meanwhile, Balan desires to unite his sister with Kesavankutty, but Menon, adhering to his rigid views, insists on marrying off Bhagirathi, played by Sharada, to the more educated and prosperous Aniyan, without honoring his earlier promise to marry Kesavankutty and Kochammini afterward.
This decision sparks tension and heartbreak, especially as Balan, out of love and concern for his sister, convinces Bhagirathi to marry Aniyan, despite her distress. After the wedding, Menon reneges on his promise and instead arranges Kesavankutty’s marriage with a wealthy girl, leaving Kesavankutty in a difficult position due to his failed exams and lack of job prospects, making him reliant on his father’s arrangements.
Meanwhile, Balan, trying to secure happiness for Kochammini, arranges her marriage with Chandran. However, they face financial hurdles, with Chandran’s father demanding a hefty dowry. Balan reaches out to Aniyan for help, but Aniyan feigns incapacity, escalating the distress. In a desperate act of sacrifice and love, Bhagirathi offers her jewelry to pawn, attempting to gather money. The situation takes a tragic turn when Kochammini, overwhelmed by despair, commits suicide before her marriage could take place.
Despite Balan’s efforts to mend the broken relationships and bring the family together, the story highlights the heavy toll of rigid societal expectations, greed, and the lack of empathy within this family structure. The narrative emphasizes how personal sacrifices, misunderstandings, and the oppressive authority of Menon influence their lives, often leading to tragic consequences. It’s a poignant tale that explores themes of love, duty, betrayal, and the destructive power of authority.
