Ryūichi Hiroki (born January 1, 1954 in Fukushima Prefecture) is a Japanese film director whose career spans more than four decades, beginning in the underground world of pink cinema and evolving into internationally acclaimed mainstream work. He entered the film industry in the late 1970s, writing a pink‑film script that led to an assistant‑director position with Genji Nakamura’s Yū Pro, where he learned editing, directing and production management. His first solo directorial effort, Sexual Abuse! Exposed Woman (1982), received harsh criticism, but he quickly refined his voice with a trio of homoerotic pink titles for ENK in 1983, most notably Our Season, which is praised by pink‑film historians for its empathetic portrayal of gay couples. Throughout the mid‑1980s Hiroki explored extreme S&M themes under the pseudonym Gō Ijūin, producing provocative works such as The SM (1984) and The Sacrifice (1986), thereby cementing his reputation as “the prince of youth porn”. By the late 1980s he transitioned toward mainstream narratives, co‑founding the production company Heaven in 1989 and directing the romance A Love Affair With Sawako (1990) for Shochiku. His breakthrough arrived with 800 Two Lap Runners (1994), a nuanced study of teenage heterosexual and homosexual relationships set against a track‑and‑field backdrop that earned a Berlin International Film Festival screening and a top‑ten spot on Kinema Junpo’s 1994 list. Subsequent films such as Midori (1996), Tokyo Trash Baby (2000) and the award‑winning Vibrator (2003) deepened his exploration of youthful alienation and female subjectivity, garnering both domestic accolades—including Best Film at the 25th Yokohama Film Festival—and international recognition. Hiroki’s later oeuvre, including The Egoists (2011), Kabukicho Love Hotel (2014) and Ride or Die (2021), continues to examine contemporary urban anxieties, while critics note his rare ability among male directors to render women with authentic psychological depth.
