Rossana Rory, born Rossana Coppa on 7 August 1927 in Rome, Italy, was an Italian actress whose career, though relatively brief, left an indelible mark on Italian cinema during the post-war golden age. She began her professional life as a model at just seventeen years old, quickly establishing herself in the visual arts by posing for the renowned stylist Vincenzo Ferdinandi and appearing in numerous fotoromanzi featured in popular weekly magazines such as Sogno, Luna Park, and Cine Illustrato. These early experiences in the world of fashion and visual storytelling laid the foundation for her transition into cinema, where she would eventually achieve lasting recognition. Rory made her film debut in 1951 in Max Neufeld's Licenza premio, but she grew increasingly dissatisfied with the supporting roles she was being offered in Italian productions. In pursuit of greater artistic opportunities, she relocated to London, where she enrolled in acting courses at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), with hopes of breaking into Hollywood. However, despite her training, her lack of success in American films led her back to Italy, where she would achieve her most memorable performances. Upon her return to Italy, Rory appeared in Guido Malatesta's war film El Alamein (1957), but it was her role as Norma in Mario Monicelli's classic caper film Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958) that cemented her place in Italian cinema history. This performance, in one of the most beloved Italian comedies of all time, showcased her talent and brought her international recognition. Her final film role came in Michelangelo Antonioni's critically acclaimed L'eclisse (1962), a film that would go on to win the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Throughout her career, she appeared in notable films including The Ungrateful Heart (1951), It Takes Two to Sin in Love (1954), The River Changes (1956), The Big Boodle (1957), Hell Canyon Outlaws (1957), Captain Falcon (1958), Robin Hood and the Pirates (1960), and Come September (1961). After retiring from cinema in 1962, she lived a relatively private life until her death on 1 April 2020 in Ciampino, Italy, at the age of 92. Her legacy endures through her memorable performances and her contribution to the rich tapestry of Italian cinematic history during one of its most vibrant eras.
