After studying at the San Francisco Art Institute, Williams broke into the professional art world through album cover work for bands such as Devo and The Residents, where his bold, grotesque imagery attracted both acclaim and controversy. In the late 1970s he co‑founded the avant‑garde collective Zinc Orange and contributed to the seminal magazine Heavy Metal, forging connections with other underground artists.
