Sir Robert Graham Stephens (14 July 1931 – 12 November 1995) was a renowned English stage and screen actor whose career spanned more than four decades, earning him a knighthood for services to drama in 1995. Born in the Shirehampton district of Bristol to shipyard labourer Reuben Stephens and factory worker Gladys Deverill, he was the eldest of three children and displayed an early talent for performance that earned him a scholarship to Esme Church’s Bradford Civic Theatre School at age eighteen, where he met his first wife, fellow student Nora Ann Simmonds. Stephens’s professional debut came with the Caryl Jenner Mobile Theatre, followed by repertory work at the Royalty Theatre in Morecambe and a stint at the Hippodrome in Preston, experiences that caught the eye of director Tony Richardson and led to his inclusion in the pioneering first season of the English Stage Company at the Royal Court in 1956. His Broadway appearances in Epitaph for George Dillon (1958‑59) garnered a Tony Award nomination, while his film work in the early 1960s included notable titles such as A Taste of Honey (1961), Cleopatra (1963) and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) opposite his second wife, actress Maggie Smith. Despite a personal and professional downturn after leaving the National Theatre in 1970 and divorcing Smith in 1975—exacerbated by heavy drinking and a nervous breakdown—Stephens rebounded in the 1980s with television roles like Abner Brown in The Box of Delights and stage work including the National Theatre’s The Mysteries (1986). The 1990s marked a triumphant resurgence when the Royal Shakespeare Company cast him as Falstaff (1991), Julius Caesar (1991) and King Lear (1993), the latter earning him the 1993 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor. Beyond acting, he voiced Aragorn in the BBC’s 1981 radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings and directed the British premiere of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea (1985). Married four times—first to Nora Ann Simmonds, then to Tarn Bassett, later to Maggie Smith (with whom he fathered actors Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens), and finally to Patricia Quinn—he was a father of four. His life ended at age 64 after complications from surgery, just months after receiving his knighthood, leaving a legacy of powerful, versatile performances that continue to influence British theatre and film.
