Robert Hunter (June 23, 1941 – September 23, 2019) was an American lyricist, poet, songwriter and occasional vocalist best known for his long‑standing collaboration with the rock band the Grateful Dead. Born in Arroyo Grande, California, he grew up listening to folk and blues, which later informed his evocative, often myth‑laden lyrics that blended Americana, mysticism and storytelling. After moving to San Francisco in the early 1960s, Hunter became a central figure in the emerging psychedelic scene, meeting guitarist Jerry Garcia and quickly establishing a partnership that would produce classics such as “Truckin’”, “Ripple”, “Uncle John’s Band” and “Terrapin Station”. Though he never performed regularly with the band, his poetic voice shaped the Dead’s identity, earning him a reputation as the “unofficial fourth member” and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee in 1994. Beyond the Grateful Dead, Hunter wrote for artists including Bob Dylan, The Band and Bob Marley, and released several solo albums where he sang his own verses, showcasing a husky baritone that matched his introspective words. His lyricism was celebrated for its literary quality; critics often compared his work to that of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, noting his skillful use of allegory, vivid imagery, and unconventional rhyme schemes. Throughout a career that spanned more than five decades, Hunter continued to write, publish poetry collections, and mentor younger songwriters, remaining active in the music community until his death in San Francisco at age 78. His legacy endures in the countless covers, tributes, and scholarly analyses that keep his poetic contributions alive for new generations of listeners.
