Riccardo Paladini was an Italian admiral whose career spanned nearly five decades, beginning in 1893 when he was admitted to the Livorno Naval Academy at just fourteen years old, and concluding with his death in 1943. Born on 12 September 1879 in Montopoli in Val d'Arno, in the Province of Florence, Tuscany, Paladini graduated from the Naval Academy in 1898 with the rank of ensign and went on to serve on various important vessels including the cruiser Amerigo Vespucci, the battleship Enrico Dandolo, and the protected cruiser Ettore Fieramosca, where he was stationed in South America between 1908 and 1909. His early military experience included participation in the Italo-Turkish War of 1911-1912, where he served with the rank of lieutenant on the protected cruiser Piemonte and later as executive officer of the destroyer Espero. During World War I, Paladini commanded torpedo boats before being promoted to lieutenant commander in 1917, after which he led the destroyers Ostro, Euro, and Rosolino Pilo, earning the prestigious War Cross for Military Valor and the War Merit Cross for his distinguished service. After the war, he served as naval commander of the island of Lussino between 1919 and 1920, before his promotion to commander in 1920. Throughout the 1920s, he held several key positions including commander of the defense of Gaeta, the Mobile MAS Flotilla, the destroyer Leone, and the Scout Group, before being promoted to captain in 1926. In 1933, Paladini achieved the rank of Contrammiraglio (Rear Admiral) and was appointed secretary of the Superior Council of the Navy, and later commanded the Naval Academy from 1934 to 1936. He continued to rise through the ranks, eventually becoming commander of the 2nd Naval Squadron with his flag on the heavy cruiser Pola. At the time of Italy's entry into World War II on 10 June 1940, Paladini commanded the 2nd Naval Squadron and participated in the Battle of Calabria on 9 July 1940, but his active combat ended abruptly on 25 July 1940 when he suffered from angina pectoris, leading to his replacement by Admiral Angelo Iachino. He was promoted to Ammiraglio d'Armata (Admiral) in January 1943 but died suddenly in Livorno on 19 March 1943 due to heart problems. His legacy includes the prestigious awards he received, including the Military Order of Savoy, in addition to his numerous commands and contributions to the Italian Regia Marina.
