Ralph Taeger: Movies & Filmography

Ralph Taeger (July 30, 1936 – March 11, 2015) was an American actor who became a recognizable television face during the 1960s through his leading roles in three short-lived but memorable series. Born in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York, to German-speaking parents, Taeger initially pursued a career in professional baseball, briefly playing on a farm team for the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, recurring knee injuries forced him to abandon his athletic ambitions, and he turned instead to acting on the advice of a high school teacher who suggested he try public speaking and the stage. In the late 1950s, Taeger enrolled at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where he also worked as a model to support himself. Within just six months of his training, he landed a major role in a production at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, and an impressed MGM executive signed him to a studio contract.

Taeger's television career began with guest appearances on popular syndicated series such as Highway Patrol, starring Broderick Crawford, and Manhunt, starring Victor Jory. His first lead role came in Klondike (1960–61), a half-hour western adventure series set during the 1897–1899 gold rush in Skagway, Alaska, where he played the rugged prospector Mike Halliday. When NBC canceled Klondike, the network transferred Taeger and co-star James Coburn to the replacement series Acapulco (1961), set in the Mexican resort, where Taeger portrayed Patrick Malone, a Korean War veteran turned beachcomber. In 1965, he guest-starred on The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and in 1967, he secured his most iconic role as Hondo Lane, a cavalry scout in the 1870s Arizona Territory, in the series Hondo (1967–68), based on the 1953 John Wayne film. Noah Beery Jr. portrayed his sidekick in the series. After Hondo ended, Taeger made only a handful of television appearances, with his final role in 1983 on Father Murphy. His limited filmography included X-15 (1961), The Carpetbaggers (1964), Stage to Thunder Rock (1964), A House Is Not a Home (1964), The Delta Factor (1970), and The Hostage Heart (1977). In a 1967 TV Guide interview, Taeger reflected on his career challenges, saying, "For a long time I couldn't get any work because people had hung a label on me as uncooperative. But I'm not; it's just that I say what I think, and sometimes that rubs folks the wrong way." In 1967, he married Linda Jarrett, and the couple had one son, Richard. The family settled in Placerville, California, where they operated Taeger's Firewood Company. Taeger passed away on March 11, 2015, in Placerville, after a long illness, at the age of 78.
