His educational journey began at the Liceo of Cauquenes, followed by higher studies at the prestigious University of Chile, where he earned his degree in civil engineering in 1921.

Following his graduation, del Río Gundián embarked on a successful professional career as an engineer, taking on various significant roles. He served as an inspector of the sewage system of Cauquenes, demonstrating his commitment to public infrastructure. He later worked as the engineer of the provinces of Maule and Concepción, before being appointed as the delegated engineer of Obras Sanitarias in northern Chile, a position he held with distinction until 1955.
