Peter Hyams: Movies & Box Office

Peter Hyams (born July 26, 1943) is esteemed for his multi-faceted roles in the film industry as an American film director, screenwriter, and cinematographer. His notable works include directing the 1977 conspiracy thriller film Capricorn One, the 1981 science fiction-thriller Outland, the 1984 science fiction film 2010: The Year We Make Contact which is a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, the 1986 action/comedy Running Scared, the comic book adaptation Timecop, the action film Sudden Death (both starring Jean-Claude Van Damme), and the horror films The Relic and End of Days. His career began in television where he worked as producer/anchorman for WHDH-TV. He transitioned into the film industry in 1970 by selling his first screenplay and has been active since 1971.

Hyams was born in New York City, New York, to Ruth Hurok and Barry Hyams, a Broadway theatrical producer and publicist. He has Russian Jewish heritage on his mother's side. His early interest in art and music led him to study at Hunter College and Syracuse University before venturing into television. His career in directing started with an ABC Movie of the Week for Aaron Spelling. He then moved on to directing another acclaimed TV movie which he also wrote, Goodnight, My Love. Hyams has also directed a block-buster, End of Days, which garnered over $200 million in worldwide box-office. He has also contributed significantly to his son's films, even taking up the role of a cinematographer.
