Penelope Dale Milford, born on March 23, 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri, grew up in the suburbs of Illinois before launching a career that would span stage, screen, and television. The daughter of Richard George Milford and Ann Marie (née Felt) Milford, she attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, where early interests in performance began to surface. After moving to New York, Milford broke into Broadway with a 1972 role in the play Lenny, and two years later originated the part of Jenny Anderson in the musical Shenandoah, earning a nomination for the inaugural Drama Desk Award for Best Featured Actress.

Milford’s film breakthrough came with Ken Russell’s Valentino (1977) and was cemented when she portrayed Vi Munson in Coming Home (1978), a performance that garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She followed this with a string of varied roles, from the horror film Blood Link (1982) to the cult classic Heathers (1989). On television she appeared in acclaimed productions such as The Oldest Living Graduate (1980), Rosie: The Rosemary Clooney Story (1982), and the Golden Globe‑winning The Burning Bed (1984). Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Milford remained active in theater, returning to the stage in 2013 for A Kind of Alaska at the Cocoon Theatre.
