Patric Curwen was a distinguished British stage and film actor born John Patric Curwen on 14 December 1884 in London, England. He came from a notable family, being the son of John Spencer Curwen of the music publishing company and the grandson of John Curwen, the founder of the Tonic sol-fa system. He received his education at Abbotsholme School in Derbyshire before continuing his studies at New College, Oxford. Curwen studied acting under the guidance of Rosina Filippi and launched his theatrical career at the prestigious Haymarket Theatre in London in 1907. During his early years on the stage, he appeared in several acclaimed productions including The Lyons Mail, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Bells, which helped establish his reputation as a talented and versatile performer in British theatre.

During World War I, Curwen enlisted in the Artists Rifles and subsequently received a commission in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. He served with the armoured car unit in France but was later moved to the Naval Intelligence Division for health reasons, where he continued his service until 1920. Following the conclusion of the war, he spent four years in India learning the intricacies of tea and coffee planting. Upon his return to England, he joined the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. From 1926 to 1928, he undertook an extensive overseas tour that included visits to Australia and New Zealand. After returning to England, he continued to work as an actor in London before transitioning into the world of cinema in 1931 and beginning his broadcasting career in 1934. He became widely recognized as the compère of the popular BBC programmes Scrapbook and Those Were The Days, which solidified his status as a beloved figure in British broadcasting. His extensive filmography includes notable works such as The Ringer (1931), Loyalties (1933), The Man in Grey (1943), The Lamp Still Burns (1943), The Shipbuilders (1943), and The Echo Murders (1945). Curwen passed away on 31 May 1949 in Rondebosch, Cape Town, South Africa, at the age of 64, leaving behind a lasting legacy in British theatre, film, and broadcasting.
