Nicole Holofcener (born March 22, 1960) is an accomplished American film and television director and screenwriter. Born into a culturally Jewish family in New York City and later relocating to Hollywood due to her mother's remarriage to film producer Charles H. Joffe, Holofcener's childhood was intricately tied to the world of cinema. Her first practical experience in the industry was as a production assistant on Woody Allen's film A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy in 1982, and she steadily rose to become an apprentice editor for Hannah and Her Sisters (1986). Initially aspiring to be an artist, she later enrolled in film courses and studied at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and at Columbia University under mentorship of industry veterans like Martin Scorsese.

Holofcener's directorial debut, Walking and Talking (1996), received critical acclaim. She went on to direct television shows like Sex and the City, Leap of Faith, and Gilmore Girls. Her subsequent feature films such as Lovely and Amazing, Friends with Money, and Enough Said have been widely acknowledged for their realistic portrayals of 'everyday' middle-class people. Her film Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, a BAFTA nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, and the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
