Walking and Talking 1996

Amelia and Laura share a deep bond as childhood best friends. However, Amelia finds herself unsettled when Laura becomes engaged to her boyfriend Frank. In an effort to move on, she begins dating Bill, the local video rental clerk whom she initially dismisses due to his looks and his passion for sci-fi and horror films. Yet, her perception shifts when she discovers Bill is crafting a screenplay about the life of Colette, igniting her attraction towards him. After they become intimate, Amelia receives a gut-wrenching call from Laura, who refers to Bill as “the ugly guy.” Stung by this remark, Bill abruptly leaves.

Simultaneously, Laura’s engagement creates a rift in her life as she starts fantasizing about one of her patients, engages in flirtation with a waiter at her favorite coffee shop, and frequently argues with Frank.

Moved by her feelings for Bill, Amelia grows increasingly obsessed after their night together. However, the silence from Bill leaves her hurt and frustrated. The story progresses as Amelia, Laura, and Frank retreat to Amelia’s family cottage to prepare for the wedding. The atmosphere turns tense when Laura and Frank argue, leading Frank to leave in the dead of night. Meanwhile, Amelia receives disturbing phone calls, prompting her to summon Andrew for protection. When Andrew answers the alarming calls, the situation resolves. Amelia and Andrew reminisce about their past relationship over drinks, and eventually they share a night of intimacy by going swimming together.

Laura and Frank attempt to salvage their relationship during a tense dinner, but the conversation deteriorates when Frank presents Laura with a biopsied mole in a box, stemming from a previous fight about his health. This unexpected gift disgusts Laura, leading her to storm out in frustration.

Later, Amelia finds out from Bill about his reconciliation with his ex-girlfriend while visiting the video store. Returning home, she shares dinner with Andrew, who reflects on his own failed relationship involving phone intimacy. Their chemistry rekindles when they share a kiss, leading to another night together as Amelia presents Andrew with the black leather pants she had bought him for Christmas—their breakup had interrupted the special moment.

Despite her unresolved feelings for Frank, Laura obsessively plans her wedding. After a frustrating appointment with a wedding makeup artist, she visits Amelia, resulting in an argument where Amelia feels Laura is neglecting their friendship. Eventually, the pair find peace and reconnect, with Amelia encouraging Laura to mend fences with Frank.

Ultimately, Laura finds a way back to Frank. On her wedding day, she allows Amelia to assist with her makeup and hair, as they had initially envisioned together. Laura expresses her belief in a brighter future with Andrew, leading both friends to the ceremony hand in hand, reaffirming the strength of their bond.
