Neil N. LaBute (born March 19, 1963) is renowned as an American playwright, film director, and screenwriter. He rose to fame with his play 'In the Company of Men' in 1997, which he later adapted for film. This notable work brought him awards from the Sundance Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the New York Film Critics Circle. His other critical filmography includes 'Your Friends & Neighbors' (1998), 'Possession' (2002), 'The Shape of Things' (2003), 'The Wicker Man' (2006), 'Some Velvet Morning' (2013), and 'Dirty Weekend' (2015). Famous for his exceptional creativity, he directed films like 'Nurse Betty' (2000), 'Lakeview Terrace' (2008), and the American adaptation of 'Death at a Funeral' (2010). In the realm of Television, LaBute created, wrote, and directed all the episodes of 'Billy & Billie,' and equally produced the TV series 'Van Helsing.' LaBute was born in Detroit, Michigan, and he has French Canadian, English, and Irish ancestry. His early years of education included theater studies at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he met actor Aaron Eckhart, who would later play leading roles in several of his films. He pushed boundaries with his plays at BYU, some of which were shut down after their premieres. However, he was also recognized as one of the 'most promising undergraduate playwrights' at the BYU theater department's annual awards. His journey also includes graduate work at the University of Kansas, New York University, and the Royal Academy of London. He furthermore participated in a writing workshop at London's Royal Court Theatre.
