Edward Malus, portrayed by Nicolas Cage, is a policeman from Seattle who receives a distressing call from his former fiancée, Willow Woodward, regarding the mysterious disappearance of her daughter, Rowan. Determined to uncover the truth, Edward secures a pilot to transport him to the isolated island where Willow and her daughter reside. This island is under the influence of the enigmatic Sister Summersisle, a character brought to life by Ellen Burstyn, who is revered as a goddess by the islanders.
Upon arrival, Edward learns that the local economy hinges on the production of honey, a business now suffering declines, as shared by Sister Honey, played by Leelee Sobieski, who seems to oversee the honey production. As Edward delves into the community’s secrets, he encounters evasive responses from the villagers when he inquires about Rowan’s whereabouts. An unsettling discovery ensues when he witnesses two men carrying a bloody bag, and later, he stumbles upon a freshly dug grave in the churchyard. Although he initially believes it to be Rowan’s, he only finds a burned doll, but a crucial piece of evidence—Rowan’s sweater—is discovered nearby.
At the village school, the unyielding Sister Rose attempts to obstruct Edward’s access to the class register. Upon finally viewing it, he realizes that Rowan’s name has ominously been crossed out. Sister Rose chillingly informs him that Rowan is to be sacrificed by fire. The dark truth emerges; the island is home to pagan worshipers, and Rowan is to be offered as a sacrificial lamb under the watchful eyes of the nuns.
As the day of the ritual approaches, Edward frantically searches the village for Rowan, leading to a confrontation with Sister Beech, who is clad in a bear costume for the ceremony. In a desperate bid, Edward steals the costume and integrates himself into the parade led by Sister Summersisle. The celebration culminates at the festival site, where Rowan is bound to a tree, facing immolation. Edward, in a heroic attempt, rescues Rowan, but fate takes a turn as she leads him back into the clutches of Sister Summersisle.
Realization dawns on Edward that the quest for Rowan was a calculated trap. Overwhelmed by the villagers, he is captured and taken to the ominous “wicker man,” a huge effigy where they entrap him. In a horrific climax, Rowan ignites the wicker man, leading to Edward’s tragic demise as the crowd chants, “The drone must die!” believing his sacrifice will rejuvenate their dwindling honey production.
The story concludes with a haunting final scene featuring Sister Willow and Sister Honey, who enter a bar and engage with two unsuspecting police officers. Their inviting demeanor hints at a dark intention, potentially luring the officers into a similar fate as Edward.
