Neil James Innes (9 December 1944 – 29 December 2019) was an English writer, comedian and musician whose career spanned more than five decades and whose work bridged the worlds of pop music, satire and television. Born in Danbury, Essex, to a Scottish army warrant officer, he grew up in West Germany before returning to England where he studied fine art at Goldsmiths College, graduating in 1966. While still a student he joined the Bonzo Dog Doo‑Dah Band, bringing disciplined arranging skills that helped the group produce hits such as “I’m the Urban Spaceman,” for which he won an Ivor Novello award in 1968. The Bonzos’ surreal appearances on the children’s series Do Not Adjust Your Set introduced Innes to future Monty Python members, leading to a long‑standing collaboration that saw him write songs for Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian, and earn the nickname “the seventh Python.” In the mid‑1970s he co‑created the Beatles parody project the Rutles with Eric Idle, composing faithful pastiches that culminated in the cult film All You Need Is Cash and a Grammy‑winning soundtrack. He also fronted his own television series The Innes Book of Records (1979‑1981), an early forerunner of the music‑video format, and later became a familiar voice in children’s programming through shows such as The Raggy Dolls and Puddle Lane. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he toured with the comedy‑rock collective GRIMMS, performed at major events like the Concert for George, and formed the Idiot Bastard Band with Adrian Edmondson and others. Innes continued recording and performing until his death from a heart attack in Montcuq, France, on 29 December 2019, leaving a legacy celebrated by collaborators ranging from John Cleese to Stephen Fry. His influence endures in the way contemporary comedy music blends wit with melodic craft, securing his place as a uniquely British cultural figure.
