Natasha Wanganeen is an Aboriginal Australian actress, writer and producer whose career has spanned over two decades, beginning in 2001 when she appeared in the acclaimed feature Rabbit‑Proof Fence. Born on 20 June 1984 in Point Pearce, South Australia, she moved to Port Adelaide at the age of five and grew up immersed in the traditions of the Ngarrindjeri, Narungga, Kaurna and Noongar peoples. Her early breakthrough came as a dormitory boss in Rabbit‑Proof Fence at just fifteen, earning her the AFI Young Actor's Award in 2004 for the television film Jessica. Since then she has built a diverse résumé that includes the dystopian thriller Cargo (2017), where she played a resilient zombie‑killer, and stage work such as the role of Gilyagan in Kate Grenville’s The Secret River at the Adelaide Festival. In addition to screen acting, Wanganeen has ventured into writing and producing, co‑creating the Indigenous sci‑fi short Bunker: The Last Fleet (2022), a cheeky re‑imagining of the First Fleet that saw her portray Tjarra, an Aboriginal warrior from a future Australia. The film premiered at the St Kilda Film Festival and toured internationally, marking a historic moment as the first Aboriginal sci‑fi movie. Her commitment to storytelling extends behind the camera; in 2020 she drafted a script titled Battle of the Ancestors, exploring Dreamtime mythology 60 000 years ago with support from Screen Australia and the South Australian Film Corporation. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Wanganeen is an outspoken advocate for Indigenous representation, organizing Black Lives Matter protests in Adelaide and speaking publicly about the need for greater cultural diversity on Australian screens. Today she continues to reside in Port Adelaide, collaborates with fellow Indigenous creators such as cousin Trevor Jamieson, and remains a vital voice in both the Australian film industry and broader cultural discourse.
