Natalya Sergeyevna Bondarchuk (born 10 May 1950 in Moscow) is a celebrated Soviet‑Russian actress and film director, renowned for her luminous performance as Hari in Andrei Tarkovsky’s landmark science‑fiction masterpiece Solaris. The daughter of legendary director‑actor Sergei Bondarchuk and celebrated actress Inna Makarova, she grew up immersed in a cinematic environment that shaped her artistic sensibilities; her half‑brother Fyodor Bondarchuk and half‑sister Yelena Bondarchuk would also become prominent figures in Russian film. After graduating from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography’s acting school in 1971 and later from its directing program in 1975, Bondarchuk debuted on screen in Sergei Gerasimov’s By the Lake (1969) and quickly amassed a diverse repertoire, including roles in You and Me (1971) and A Soldier Came Back from the Front (1971). Her portrayal of the ethereal Hari earned international acclaim, with Tarkovsky himself noting in his diary that she “has outshone everybody,” and she later described the role as her favorite. Beyond acting, Bondarchuk cultivated a prolific directing career, beginning with the diploma film The Hapless Matrenka (1975) and followed by her first feature Living Rainbow (1982), a heartfelt drama shot in Yalta. She continued with adaptations such as Bambi’s Childhood (1985) and Bambi’s Youth (1986), and later directed Lord, Hear My Prayer (1991) and Pushkin: The Last Duel (2006). Since 1979 she has taught at VGIK, influencing new generations of filmmakers, and she also heads a children’s opera theater on Krasnaya Presnya, where her son Ivan performed as a youngster. Married to actor Nikolai Burlyayev since 1973, the couple’s artistic partnership extends to their son Ivan, who appears in the family’s projects. Bondarchuk’s enduring presence in cinema, education, and theater underscores her multifaceted contribution to Russian cultural life.
