Mikhail Konstantinovich Kalatozov, born Mikheil Kalatozishvili on 28 December 1903 in Tiflis of the Russian Empire, hailed from an aristocratic Georgian family that traced its roots to the 13th‑century Amirejibi house. His early education in economics gave way to a restless pursuit of the arts, and after a brief stint as an actor he discovered a talent for cinematography, working on pioneering documentaries such as Their Kingdom and the celebrated Salt for Svanetia (1930). In 1933 he entered the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts, and by 1936 he was heading the Kartuli Pilmi studio before moving to Lenfilm in Leningrad as a director. Throughout World War II Kalatozov produced propaganda films and served as a cultural attaché at the Soviet embassy in the United States, experiences that broadened his cinematic outlook and exposed him to Western film techniques. The second half of Kalatozov’s career is defined by a string of internationally acclaimed features. The Cranes Are Flying (1957) not only topped the Soviet box‑office with over 28 million viewers but also earned the Palme d’Or at Cannes, establishing him as a master of visual storytelling supported by Sergey Urusevsky’s innovative camerawork. He followed this success with Letter Never Sent (1959), the stylistically bold I Am Cuba (1964)—a joint Soviet‑Cuban project that would later inspire directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola—and the epic The Red Tent (1969), a Soviet‑Italian co‑production featuring stars such as Peter Finch and Sean Connery. Honored as a People’s Artist of the USSR in 1969, Kalatozov continued shaping Soviet cinema until his last film in 1971. He died in Moscow on 26 March 1973 after a series of heart attacks and was interred at Novodevichy Cemetery. His legacy lives on through the Mikhail Kalatozov Fund, founded by his grandson, which supports film preservation and new filmmaking initiatives.
