On the outskirts of Moscow, three young friends—Sashka Aleksandr Kuznetsov, Borya, and Vaska—dreamed of adventure. While drifting on an old boat along the Yauza River, they imagined a voyage down a great river and pledged to reunite someday to chase that dream.
Thirty years pass, and the thread of that childhood promise pulls them back together. Chizhov, Boris Petrovich Chizhov, has become a renowned neurosurgery professor; Lapin, Alexander Fyodorovich Lapin, is a doctor of biological sciences and the director of an Experimental Institute of Animal Husbandry; and Nestratov, Vasily Vasilyevich Nestratov, is an academician of architecture. Remembering their youthful pact, Lapin gathers his old friends, and the quartet sets off on a journey down a great river aboard a simple wooden raft. The voyage itself becomes a test of friendship, resolve, and shared history as the friends drift through changing landscapes and weathered towns, letting the river carry them toward a future they once believed possible.
As the days unfold, the trip brings unexpected happiness for Lapin, who finds a long-lost love waiting at the edges of memory, a quiet beacon amid the uncertain waters. The trip also showcases Chizhov’s steady, life-saving skill—his surgical brilliance shines when a girl in a local hospital suffers a serious injury, and he performs a craniocerebral operation that offers a chance at survival. Meanwhile, Nestratov’s perspective is transformed by the journey itself; the experience humbles his bureaucratic arrogance and draws him back toward his roots, reminding him that true progress can be rooted in simpler, enduring connections rather than titles alone.
Throughout the expedition, the companions navigate moments of peril, reflection, and renewed affection, all while the river flows onward, carrying them toward the unknown with a shared sense of purpose. The narrative threads of loyalty, professional pride, and personal longing intertwine as the river becomes a moving backdrop for growth, forgiveness, and the enduring power of friendship.
