Mikael Håfström, born Jan Mikael Håfström in Lund, Sweden on 12 June 1960, is a Swedish film director and screenwriter best known for his work in both Scandinavian and Hollywood horror and action genres. His early education in film took place at Stockholm University where he studied cinematography and at the School of Visual Arts, giving him a solid grounding in both European and American filmmaking techniques. Håfström made his directorial debut in the late 1980s and quickly established a reputation for crafting tense atmospheres, a skill that culminated in his 2003 feature Evil (original title Ondska), which earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Oscars, marking the first time a Swedish horror film received such recognition.
