Merv Griffin (Mervyn Edward Griffin Jr., July 6, 1925 – August 12, 2007) was an American television show host, singer, actor, and media mogul whose influence reshaped American entertainment. Born in San Mateo, California to a stock‑broker father and a homemaker mother, Griffin grew up in a devout Irish‑American Catholic household where he sang in the church choir and played organ as a teenager. After graduating from San Mateo High School in 1942, he attended San Mateo Junior College and the University of San Francisco, joining the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity before launching a radio singing career at age 19. His smooth baritone led to a contract with Freddy Martin’s orchestra, a pioneering magnetic‑tape album on his own Panda Records, and a 1949 hit version of “I’ve Got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts” that sold three million copies. Transitioning to film, he appeared in several 1950s movies before purchasing his Warner Bros. contract and moving into television, where he first co‑hosted Summer Holiday and later created the game shows Play Your Hunch and Keep Talking.

From 1965 to 1986 Griffin helmed The Merv Griffin Show, a syndicated talk program celebrated for its eclectic guests, bold political commentary, and spontaneous moments such as the famous “And now…here I come!” entrance. Simultaneously he revolutionized the game‑show landscape by inventing Jeopardy! (1964) and Wheel of Fortune (1975), composing signature themes that endured for decades. His business acumen extended to real‑estate ventures, including ownership of the Beverly Hilton and Resorts International, though the latter led to a high‑profile bankruptcy in 1989. Griffin married comedian Julann Wright in 1958; they had one son, Tony. A lifelong Republican, a devoted practitioner of Transcendental Meditation, and a private individual who hinted at a “quarter‑sexual” sense of humor, Griffin died of prostate cancer in 2007 at age 82, leaving a legacy valued at over $1 billion and a lasting imprint on television history.
