Maneesh Sharma, born on 6 January 1978 in Delhi, India, has emerged as a dynamic force within contemporary Hindi cinema, blending commercial appeal with nuanced storytelling. Growing up in various neighborhoods of Delhi, including Pitam Pura, he attended Delhi Public School, R K Puram, where early exposure to performance art sparked his passion for narrative craft. He pursued a bachelor's degree in English literature at Hansraj College, actively participating in the theatre society, which honed his understanding of character development and stage dynamics. After completing his undergraduate studies, Sharma ventured abroad to the California Institute of the Arts, earning a Master of Fine Arts in filmmaking and gaining valuable experience as an associate director on the English‑German student film Trona (2004). Upon returning to India, he entered the world of Bollywood as an assistant director on Yash Raj Films productions such as Fanaa (2006), Aaja Nachle (2007) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), learning the intricacies of large‑scale film production. His directorial debut, Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), written by himself and starring newcomers Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma, was both a critical and commercial triumph, earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director.
