Mahnaz Afshar (born June 10, 1977 in Tehran) is an Iranian actress who rose to prominence in the late‑1990s after her television debut in the series Gomshodeh. She quickly transitioned to cinema with the 1998 film Doostan and gained critical attention for her performance in Shoor‑e Eshgh (2000), where her striking resemblance to iconic singer Googoosh attracted considerable media buzz. Throughout the 2000s Afshar became a staple of Iran’s commercial film industry, starring in a succession of box‑office hits and collaborating with directors such as Nader Moghaddas and Ali Shah‑Hatami. Her career took an artistic turn in the 2010s, earning her the Crystal Simorgh for Best Supporting Actress at the 2010 Fajr Film Festival for Saadat Abad and nominations for Best Actress for Darkoob (2017) and Ghasam (2018). In addition to acting, she expanded her repertoire by producing charitable events, most notably a 2012 concert at Milad Tower to aid earthquake victims in Azerbaijan, and by serving as a judge on Persia’s Got Talent in 2019. Afshar’s personal life has been equally public; she married the son of former deputy culture minister, Mohammad Yasin Ramin, in June 2014, and the couple welcomed a daughter, Liana, in May 2015 before divorcing in 2019. Her outspoken criticism of Iran’s mandatory hijab laws and support for political prisoners have led to multiple legal charges and a ban on her appearing on screen in Iran, prompting her departure from the country in 2019. Since then she has obtained German citizenship while continuing to work internationally, cementing her status as a resilient figure in contemporary Middle Eastern cinema.
