Mahalia Jackson (born Mahala Jackson on 1911‑10‑26 in New Orleans, Louisiana) was an American gospel singer whose powerful contralto reshaped the sound of 20th‑century sacred music. Raised in extreme poverty by her mother Charity Clark and later by her aunt Duke, she found sanctuary in the Baptist and Pentecostal churches of New Orleans, where the rhythmic “bounce” of line‑out hymnody and the exuberant jubilee style planted the seeds of her later improvisational brilliance. At age twelve she began singing in junior choirs, and by her mid‑teens she had absorbed the raw intensity of Bessie Smith and the compositional craft of Thomas Dorsey, a combination that would define gospel blues.
