Raised in Manchester, England, her early pursuits were strongly arts-focused, attending Wilbraham High School and engaging in the local Stretford Children's Theatre. Further honing her acting skills, Ashbourne was an active member of the University of Manchester Stage Society and Manchester Youth Theatre, finalizing her dramatic education journey at the Webber Drama School from 19th April 1982.

Ashbourne's acting career, spanning from 1987 up till the present, is decorated with a variety of recognisable roles in British series and television films such as Playing the Field (1998), Unforgotten (2017), and Grantchester (2017) among others.
