Lia Williams was born on 26 November 1964 in Birkenhead, Cheshire, England, and trained at the London Studio Centre before launching a versatile career that spans stage, screen, and direction. Her first professional engagement came in 1984 when she understudied in the West End production of Daisy Pulls It Off, quickly moving into a principal role that caught the eye of playwright Alan Ayckbourn. A breakthrough arrived in 1991 with her performance in The Revengers' Comedies, earning her the Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Most Promising Newcomer and a Laurence Olivier nomination the following year. Over the next two decades she became a stalwart of both British and American theatre, originating the role of Carol in David Mamet’s Oleanna (1993) and sharing the stage with Michael Gambon in David Hare’s Skylight (1997), a production that garnered Olivier and Tony nods. Her collaborations with Harold Pinter were particularly notable, featuring roles in The Homecoming, The Collection, and Old Times, while her portrayal of Clytemnestra in Robert Icke’s Oresteia secured both Olivier and Evening Standard nominations.
