Lee "Scratch" Perry, born Rainford Hugh Perry on 20 March 1936 in Kingston, Jamaica, was a pioneering Jamaican music producer, songwriter, and vocalist who reshaped the landscape of reggae and dub. From humble beginnings, he left school at ten to work as a baker and later as a clerk before immersing himself in the vibrant sound system culture of 1950s Jamaica, where his ear for rhythm and innovative spirit first emerged. In the early 1960s he joined Coxsone Dodd's Studio One as a session musician, but his restless creativity soon led him to establish his own studio, the legendary Black Ark, where he crafted idiosyncratic productions that blended reverberated drums, echoing vocals, and experimental tape effects. His groundbreaking techniques—such as dropping and re‑dropping instrumental tracks, employing unconventional objects as instruments, and manipulating sound with homemade equipment—earned him the reputation of a true sonic alchemist and earned the nickname "the Jamaican George Martin of dub". Throughout the 1970s Perry collaborated with icons like Bob Marley and the Wailers, producing seminal tracks that propelled reggae onto the international stage, while his solo albums, including Super Ape and Roast Fish and Chips, became cult classics celebrated for their otherworldly atmospheres. After the destruction of the Black Ark by a fire in 1982, he continued to work abroad, influencing artists across genres, from punk to hip‑hop, and forging alliances with musicians such as the Beastie Boys and Trip hop pioneer Massive Attack. Despite health challenges in later life, Perry remained a prolific creator, releasing new material well into his eighties and receiving numerous honors, including the Jamaican Order of Distinction. He passed away on 29 August 2021, leaving an indelible legacy that continues to inspire producers, performers, and listeners worldwide.
