Who is the primary antagonist leading the Huns?
Read the complete plot summary of Mulan, including all major events, twists, and the full ending explained in detail. Explore key characters, themes, hidden meanings, and everything you need to understand the story from beginning to end.
Across ancient China, the Huns, led by the ruthless Shan Yu, breach the Great Wall and thrust the empire into a perilous crisis. The Emperor responds with a sweeping mobilization: one man from every family is conscripted to join the Imperial Army, a rule meant to defend the realm but which places heavy demands on ordinary families.
Fa Mulan, Lee Perry an adventurous young woman, hopes to bring honor to her family. She is pressed to meet a matchmaker to prove her fitness as a future wife, yet a string of missteps and social pressures leaves her feeling judged and misread by those who expect conformity. Fa Zhou, Mulan’s elderly father and a respected veteran, is eventually drafted, a heart-wrenching moment that tests every thread of filial piety.
Mulan pleads for him not to go, but his sense of duty is unshaken. Faced with a father’s perilous path, she makes a drastic choice: she cuts her long hair, slips into her father’s sword and armor, and disguises herself as a man so she can enlist in his stead. In the family temple, the spirits of their ancestors awaken when Mushu, Mushu, Joanna Moore a disgraced dragon guardian turned comic misfit, is tasked with guiding Mulan. The Great Ancestor decides that the stone dragon guardian should guide her, and sends Mushu to wake him. After inadvertently destroying the guardian’s statue, Mushu resolves to redeem himself in the eyes of the ancestors by personally aiding Mulan.
Reporting to the training camp, Mulan passes as a man named “Fa Ping,” with Mushu providing encouragement and clumsy guidance along the way. Under the command of Captain Li Shang, Ric Herbert, she and her fellow recruits—Yao, Ling, and Chien-Po—begin a demanding regimen that pushes them to their physical and strategic limits. The Emperor’s counselor Chi-Fu threatens to sway the Emperor against sending Shang’s men to the mountains, provoking tension and doubt within the broader plan to face the Hun invasion. To keep Shang steadfast, Mushu engineers a fake letter from Shang’s father, General Li, ordering Shang to march with the main imperial army into the mountains. The reinforcements depart and soon learn the brutal truth: the Huns have slaughtered Li and his troops.
As the marching column ascends a treacherous mountain pass, the Hun ambush erupts with brutal force. Mulan leverages a Huolongchushui cannon to trigger an avalanche that buries the attackers, but her involvement leaves her badly wounded. When Shang and the others tend to her injuries, they discover Mulan’s true sex. Rather than executing her under the letter of the law, Shang spares her life and expels her from the army, returning to the capital to report the Hun threat and their supposed defeat. Yet Mulan soon learns Shan Yu and a number of his warriors have survived.
Mulan races to the city to warn Shang just as the Huns seize the palace and seize the Emperor. In a tense confrontation, Shan Yu’s forces are ultimately subdued, and Mulan lures Shan Yu onto the roof, pinning him with his own sword. Guided by Mulan, Mushu uses a skyrocket to propel Shan Yu into a fireworks launching tower, where he is killed in a spectacular blaze.
The Emperor and the city’s people hail Mulan for saving them, bowing in gratitude and recognizing her courage. She accepts the Emperor’s crest and Shan Yu’s sword as gifts but declines the invitation to join the royal council. Mulan returns home to present these tokens to her father, who is overjoyed simply to have her safe and back with the family. Meanwhile, Shang arrives and accepts her invitation to stay for dinner, hinting at a future together. Mushu is reinstated as a Fa family guardian as the ancestors celebrate, and the tale ends with a sense that true honor can come from places you least expect.
