Lavrente Indico Diaz (born December 30, 1958) is a Filipino independent filmmaker and former film critic renowned for pioneering the slow cinema movement. His work is distinguished by extraordinarily long runtimes, minimalist storytelling, and a relentless focus on the social and political realities of the Philippines. Growing up in Columbio, Cotabato, Diaz experienced the violent clashes between Muslim insurgents and the government, a backdrop that later informed the bleak, contemplative tone of his narratives. After earning an economics degree in 1980, he moved to Manila, writing about music and film before becoming a production assistant and later a film critic for the Manila Standard. A brief stint in New York allowed him to study filmmaking, and he earned early literary recognition under the pseudonym Bahagharing Timog with a Palanca Award in 1990.

Diaz’s debut feature, Serafin Geronimo: Ang Kriminal ng Baryo Concepcion (1999), brought him to the Hong Kong International Film Festival, but it was the monumental Batang West Side and Evolution of a Filipino Family that cemented his reputation for marathon-length cinema. Subsequent works such as Norte, the End of History (2013), From What Is Before (2014), A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery (2016), and The Woman Who Left (2022) have garnered top honors at Cannes, Locarno, Berlin, and Venice, including a Golden Lion in 2022. Beyond awards, Diaz has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Prince Claus Award, and a Radcliffe Fellowship, and he joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2017. His recent projects include Essential Truths of the Lake (2023), Phantosmia (2024), and the 2025 Cannes entry Magellan, while he is slated to act in the upcoming horror film The Sacrifice. His career, spanning over two decades, continues to challenge cinematic conventions and amplify the Philippines’ complex history.
