In the late-1970s Philippines, Hilarion Zabala, a highly decorated and retired Master Sergeant and family man, begins to sense a strange, pervasive smell around his home. When pest control fails to identify a source for the odor, he seeks help from Dr. Corazon Valle to understand what’s happening. The doctor, portrayed by the hospital’s own voice of calm, suspects phantosmia and begins counseling, hoping to untangle the muddle of memories that haunt Zabala.

As symptoms worsen, Valle proposes a radical idea she believes could unlock the veteran’s troubled memories: a process called “reimmersion,” which requires Zabala to return to some form of military employment so his physical presence in a military setting might shed light on his experiences. He agrees, and this new assignment shifts him from his quiet home life to the more rigid world of discipline and order.

Zabala takes a job as a cook for local prison inmates, a role he carries out with quiet efficiency. Yet a further opportunity arises when a posting for a guard to supervise the rear of the penal colony on the remote Pulo Island becomes available, and he applies. On his arrival, he is greeted by the overseer, Major Lukas, who reluctantly accepts Zabala’s unusual request to be stationed alone at his post, away from a relieving companion.

During his days on the island, Zabala surveys the colony and observes the prisoners as they work the land, all while listening to Lukas’ broadcasts over the loudspeaker. He also becomes curious about life beyond the walls, especially the family-run restaurant nearby, which is run by Narda, her adopted son Setong, and her adopted daughter Reyna, the latter of whom is entangled in a distressing situation of prostitution under Narda’s control. Zabala disapproves of the proximity of the restaurant to his post, the sales of alcohol, and the exploitation he discovers, yet he finds it difficult to effect meaningful change as his colleagues look the other way.

At night, Zabala works through his memories in a journal Valle provides, trying to connect his present duties with the traumas of his past. Tensions between Zabala and the locals deepen when Narda visits Lukas and nudges him toward collaboration with Zabala, hoping to turn Reyna into a private client for the overseer. Setong escorts Reyna to Lukas’ area, and Zabala tails them, growing more invested in what transpires beyond the prison’s fences.

A nearby resident, Maku from Dugong Island, becomes a link in Zabala’s growing network of observers; he travels by boat to buy groceries from Narda, and the two men form a quiet connection built on shared circumstance and uncertain futures.

Periodically, outsiders arrive on the island to hunt the Haring Musang, a mythic boar-like creature that has haunted local memory—an obsession shared by Lukas and his own family history, including Lukas’ father. To maintain appearances, Narda halts Reyna’s prostitution for a time. After a hunter falls off a cliff during the hunt, Zabala organizes a rescue effort, but the attempt ends in failure, and the would-be hunt for the beast dissolves without success. Zabala reflects on the death that has shadowed his past life as a killer, wondering if there can be any meaningful reason left to hold onto.

Eventually, Reyna’s prostitution resumes, and Zabala confronts both Reyna and Setong, insisting that what they are doing is wrong and proposing an escape plan with Maku’s help. Reyna agrees, and Zabala arranges for her to hide with Maku in a secluded part of the forest. Setong refuses and returns to Narda, lying that Reyna had escaped when he was taking a nap. Narda beats him and compels him to reveal the truth to Lukas.

Enraged, Lukas orders Zabala to accompany him on a dangerous trek to hunt down both the Haring Musang and Reyna. The night unfolds with Lukas wandering through the forest while Zabala keeps watch by the campfire. By morning, after delivering his standard broadcast, Lukas is shot by Zabala, a decision Zabala frames as a necessary act to allow victims like Reyna to escape, even as he grapples with the belief that no one should ever be asked to kill.

With a final, silent signal, Zabala coordinates with Maku and Reyna, and they make their way off the island along a river in Maku’s boat, leaving the island behind as a new, uncertain horizon begins to unfold.
