The Phantom Speaks 1945

Harvey Bogardus [Tom Powers] kills a man he believes is having an affair with his wife, and is sentenced to the electric chair. Reporter Matt Fraser [Richard Arlen] is assigned to speak with Dr. Paul Renwick [Stanley Ridges], who is interviewing Bogardus, and Matt happens to be dating Renwick’s daughter, Joan Renwick [Lynne Roberts]. This personal connection colors the assignment as the two men begin their conversation about guilt, justice, and what lies beyond death.

Renwick presents a bold theory: that strong-willed souls can survive death, and that Bogardus might return after the execution to prove it. As Bogardus is executed, the film shifts from a courtroom tragedy to a chilling, supernatural twist, with the idea that what follows could defy conventional endings. The moment Bogardus dies, a restless spirit seems to insinuate itself into Renwick, seizing control of his body and mind.

In a shocking turn, the possession leads Renwick to shoot and kill the attorney who represented Bogardus at the trial, James J. Kennerly [Joseph Granby], whom Bogardus had distrusted as incompetent. Matt and the police quickly piece together a crucial clue: the attorney’s dictaphone contains Bogardus’ voice, captured at the moment of death, proving that something otherworldly may have stepped into Renwick’s flesh.

The possessed Renwick does not stop there. He kills Bogardus’ wife, Mary Fabian [Doreen McCann], a blow that deepens the moral and emotional stakes of the case. With Renwick haunted by memory gaps, Bogardus’ control seems to jerk him back and forth, making it hard for anyone to know where the truth ends and the possession begins. The danger escalates when Renwick kills an eyewitness to the crime, leaving Matt and the authorities with fewer tangible witnesses and more terrifying questions.

Bogardus then pushes Renwick toward an even darker goal: to compel him to kill Matt Fraser and District Attorney Owen McAllister [Jonathan Hale]. Renwick’s struggle with his own will intensifies as he fights against becoming a vessel for Bogardus’ malice, yet Bogardus’ hold proves stubborn. An attempted suicide by Renwick is thwarted by the darker force, which compels him to resist surrender while continuing the onslaught.

As the tension crescendos, Matt travels to warn McAllister, and they escape together in Matt’s car, with Renwick riding in the back seat. The chase becomes a tense showdown between belief and possession, with Matt determined to protect the innocent and bring the truth to light. In the end, Matt’s resolve helps ensure a conviction for murder, and Renwick is condemned to the electric chair.

Even as the legal process closes, the horror lingers. On the way to the death chamber, Renwick remains a host to Bogardus, speaking in Bogardus’ voice and uttering the same words he did before his own execution. Matt and McAllister, the sole witnesses to Bogardus’ execution, confront the terrifying possibility that the supernatural has erased the line between justice and the afterlife, leaving them to grapple with a truth that unsettles everything they thought they knew.
