Kirill Semyonovich Serebrennikov (born 7 September 1969) is a Russian stage and film director, theatre designer, and professor who has become one of the most influential and controversial cultural figures in contemporary Russia. Born in Rostov‑on‑Don to a Jewish father, a surgeon, and a Ukrainian mother, a teacher, he showed an early fascination with performance, founding a student theatre in the eighth grade and staging a play called “Shadow”. Although he graduated with honours in physics from Rostov State University in 1992, he entered the world of television and independent directing almost immediately, making his professional debut in 1990 and staging his first professional production in 1994. Serebrennikov’s career accelerated with his 1998 entrance into cinema, and in 2001 he staged his first Moscow production, later collaborating with institutions such as the Moscow Chekhov Theatre, the Latvian National Theatre, the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Operas, as well as German houses like the Komische Oper Berlin and Stuttgart Opera. Since 2012 he has served as artistic director of the Gogol Center, turning the venue into a hotbed for avant‑garde theatre, opera, and film that challenges official Russian narratives. His films, including Yuri’s Day (2008), The Student (2016), Leto (2018) and Tchaikovsky’s Wife (2022), have earned accolades at Cannes, Locarno, Rome and Warsaw, while his stage works such as The Golden Cockerel (2011) and The Black Monk (2022) have been praised for their daring satirical edge. In 2017 Serebrennikov was arrested on charges of embezzlement, a case widely condemned as politically motivated because of his outspoken support for LGBT rights and criticism of Russian policy; after two years of house arrest he was sentenced to probation in 2020, only to have the sentence annulled in 2022 after repaying alleged damages. Despite repression, he continued to create, staging ballets like Nureyev and A Hero of Our Time abroad, receiving the National Order of the Legion of Honour in 2025 and the Europe Theatre Prize in 2017. His work is characterized by a blend of scientific precision, theatrical innovation, and unapologetic social critique, making him a pivotal figure in the global theatre‑film landscape.
