José Isaac Palma y Velásquez, also known as José Palma, was a revered Filipino poet and soldier. Born on June 3, 1876, in Tondo, Manila, during the period of the Spanish Empire, he was the youngest child of Don Hermogenes Palma, an office clerk, and Hilaria Velásquez. Palma is renowned as the lyricist of the Philippine National Anthem. He gained prominence during his time on the staff of 'La independencia' and wrote 'Filipinas', a patriotic poem in Spanish, which subsequently became the basis for all translations of the Philippine National Anthem. Initially, his education in Tondó helped him to refine his skills in poetry. Notable among his earliest works is 'La cruz de sampaguitas' published in 1893. During the upswing of revolution activities, Palma demonstrated his patriotism by crafting numerous poems. Even though incapable of fighting due to physical limitations, he remained an active contributor to cultural practices in the war camps, instilling morale through traditional Filipino poetry and music. Joining the staff of 'La independencia' marked a significant point in his career, enabling his fight against Americans using his poetical prowess where he couldn't physically. The creation of 'Filipinas' stands out as it was scribed during the revolutionary phase, a time when the crew of the newspaper stood against the pursuing American forces. Unfortunately, José Palma's life was cut short by tuberculosis at the age of 26.
