Jon Arthur, born Jonathan Arthur Goerss on June 14, 1918 in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, emerged from a modest German‑American background to become one of the most beloved voices of mid‑century American radio. The son of Rev. Daniel Friedrich Goerss, a Lutheran minister, and Esther Eleanor Leverentz, both originally from Niagara County, New York, Arthur was a third‑generation German‑American whose great‑grandparents had immigrated from Germany. After completing a brief stint at a radio school in Pittsburgh, he began his broadcasting career at WJLS in Beckley, West Virginia, signing on just two weeks after the station launched in 1939. His early work quickly led him to stations in Ogdensburg, New York, and eventually to the West Coast, but it was his move to Cincinnati that cemented his legacy. At WSAI, Arthur created the whimsical character Sparkie, a “little elf from the land of make‑believe,” whose voice was in fact Arthur’s own sped up recording. Together with writer Don Kortekamp, Arthur launched the Big Jon and Sparkie show in 1950, a daily program that was syndicated to 181 ABC stations and later expanded into the two‑hour Saturday morning extravaganza No School Today, reaching an estimated 12 million listeners across 275 stations. The show’s catchy theme, Ann Stephens’ rendition of “Teddy Bears’ Picnic,” and its interactive birthday segment endeared it to generations of children across the United States.

Beyond the microphone, Arthur’s influence extended into print and comic media, with a Ziff‑Davis comic adaptation and a satirical cameo in Mad magazine’s fourth issue. Throughout the 1960s he held a midday slot at WKRC in Cincinnati, and his life story even featured on the radio drama Unshackled. Despite a brief attempt to transition the program to television, the beloved characters persisted on the Family Radio Network from 1962 until Arthur’s death in Alameda County, California, on February 24, 1982. His inventive use of voice manipulation, engaging storytelling, and genuine connection with young audiences left an indelible mark on American broadcasting history.
