John Meillon: Movies & Box Office

John Meillon, OBE (1 May 1934 – 11 August 1989) was a distinguished Australian character actor acclaimed for his roles in both dramatic and comedic genres. Known best for playing Walter Reilly in the iconic 'Crocodile Dundee' films, he also secured a place in pop culture for his voice-over work in Victoria Bitter beer commercials. Meillon graced several Australian New Wave films, most notably 'Wake in Fright' and 'The Cars That Ate Paris.' Born in Mosman, New South Wales, he began his acting journey at the youthful age of eleven, first making his mark on the airwaves in the ABC's radio serial 'Stumpy', and taking to the stage the following year. He was part of the John Alden Shakespeare Touring Company at sixteen and later appeared in early Australian TV dramas. His career spanned continents, as he worked in England from 1959 to 1965. During this period, Meillon made a conscious effort to explore roles outside his Australian identity. In 1976, his performance as 'Casey' in 'The Fourth Wish' earned him the AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Appreciated for his rich baritone, Meillon was an in-demand choice for voice-over work. He received his OBE in the 1979 Queen's Birthday Honours in recognition of his contributions to theatre. He also ventured into music, releasing a single 'Tap Tap'/'Picture Show Man' in 1977.
