John Robert Lewis (1940-02-21), known as John Lewis, was an American politician and civil rights leader who served in the United States House of Representatives for Georgia's 5th congressional district from January 3, 1987 until his death in July 2020. He was initially involved with the civil rights movement, participating in the Nashville sit-ins in 1960 and the Freedom Rides in 1961. From 1963 to 1966, he chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and is also known as one of the 'Big Six' leaders who organized the 1963 March on Washington. Lewis played a crucial role in the civil rights movement, particularly in its efforts to end legalized racial segregation in the United States. He was a key figure in the Selma to Montgomery marches across Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965, which became known as 'Bloody Sunday' due to an orchestrated attack by state troopers and police on the participants, including Lewis. Later, Lewis transitioned to a political career and was known for his dedication to the ideals of fairness, justice, and non-violent protest. He served as the senior chief deputy whip for the Democratic party in the House, and received numerous honorary awards including multiple Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees.
