Jackson Beck was an American actor whose career spanned seven decades, making him one of the most recognizable voices of mid‑twentieth‑century American media. Born on July 23, 1912, in New York City, he was the son of stage and silent‑film actor Max Beck and the grandson of German immigrant Joseph Beck, founder of the distillery Joseph Beck & Sons. From an early age he was immersed in the world of performance, and he entered radio broadcasting in the early 1930s, first at stations WINS and WHN. By 1934 he was announcing The Adventures of Babe Ruth, and in 1943 he took over as the iconic narrator of the radio series The Adventures of Superman, delivering the unforgettable prologue, strange visitor from another planet…. His versatility allowed him to play roles such as the teenage copy boy Beany Martin, occasional tough‑guys, and even the butler Alfred Beagle on cross‑overs featuring Batman. Throughout the 1940s he impersonated world leaders like Joseph Stalin for The March of Time, starred as The Cisco Kid from 1942 to 1945, and voiced sleuth Philo Vance in a syndicated series that ran until 1950. On television he voiced Perry White and narrated the first season of Tom Corbett Space Cadet, while his film work included dubbing the judge in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and narrating Woody Allen’s Take the Money and Run. Beck became a staple of animation as the regular voice of Bluto in the Famous Studios Popeye shorts, as well as the father of Little Lulu, the fox in Baby Huey cartoons, and Buzzy the Crow, a role he performed in a stylized black dialect. He later voiced King Leonardo for the 1960s cartoon, narrated the 1980s G I Joe series, and provided countless network promos, Saturday Night Live sketches, movie trailers and commercial spots, including a memorable campaign for Little Caesars Pizza. In his later years he continued to lend his voice to children’s records, NPR dramatizations, and the Storybook Weaver video games, with his final recording made in 2004. Jackson Beck died of a stroke on July 28, 2004, five days after his ninety‑second birthday, and was buried in Brooklyn’s Mount Hope Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy that still echoes in classic radio and animation.
