Born on 23 April 1950 in Whitechapel, London, he attended the Central Foundation Boys' School before earning a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1969, where he honed the classical techniques that would define his later work. Goodman made his professional debut in 1972 and quickly established himself as a reliable character actor, gaining early television credits in series such as Dalziel and Pascoe and Foyle's War.
